Polish Bishops Condemn Abortion Move

The Polish bishops have condemned two bills accepted by the Sejm (Polish Parliament) that would expand abortion “access.”

The two bills passed by the Sejm promoted societal acceptance of abortion, even if they never become law, the Polish Bishops’ Conference stated on October 24 at the conclusion of its plenary assembly in Zakopane, southern Poland.

The bishops said that abortion was being portrayed as “morally indifferent” by the bills introduced by the governing left-wing coalition. They called for respect for the life of every child, including the unborn, and for appropriate long-term help for pregnant women in difficult situations.

“Caring for the lives of the vulnerable, especially unborn children, is a duty of conscience and an expression of every person’s social responsibility,” the bishops declared.

One of the bills seeks to amend the country’s abortion law to allow eugenic abortions when there is allegedly a high probability of severe or life-threatening illnesses in an unborn child. It would be a return to the legal situation before the end of 2020, when the Constitutional Tribunal, Poland’s highest court, ruled that eugenic abortion was unconstitutional. The second bill is intended to abolish penalties for persons aiding or abetting illegal abortions.
