Prolife campaigners have blasted a new Liberal government bill that will allow people to be euthanased without their consent as a “horror.”
Campaign Life Coalition is warning that Bill C-41, also known as the “safeguards act,” would not require a practitioner to “inform the person what is about to happen or even speak with them before ending their life” once an advance request is made.
“The killing procedure may proceed solely on the basis of the earlier request, and the practitioner’s assessment that the described symptoms and suffering are present, subject only to a check for what the bill calls ‘refusal or resistance,’” said CLC national president Jeff Gunnarson.
Gunnarson said that the bill is a “slippery slope” and a “horror that is not without historical precedent.”
“The government is offering protection for those with mental illness at the expense of those with dementia. It’s literally trading human lives, and it’s simply immoral,” he stressed.
Gunnarson added that the bill raises questions as to who is behind the policy – “ordinary Canadians or the euthanasia lobby.”
Euthanasia in Canada has become very prevalent. Recent statistics show that the nation recorded more deaths by euthanasia than murders by guns in the United States in 2024.
